Photographer’s Note 작가노트 (January 12, 2013, Zaatari Syrian Refugee Camp) The Background Story The scene was miserable. More than 500 tents that were either flooded or had collapsed from the winter storm dotted the desert. While photographing this dismal scene at the refugee camp someone shouted at me in Arabic, "Haki fadi," which means ‘broken promise’ or ‘empty word.’ Though many journalists have documented the state of the camp, there has not been much improvement in the living conditions. Time has deepened the scars of the people, and I presently found myself bearing the brunt of their despair. A moment later, a refugee man tapped me on my shoulder, asking me to see his fallen tent. He cried out, "Why did my son have to die when we came here to live?" The winter storm had taken the life of his two-year-old son. In this moment, I pondered deeply and asked myself whether or not I was making any difference in their lives as a photojournalist. (2013년 1월 12일, 자타리 시리아 난민캠프) <아버지의 절규> 전시작품의 배경 스토리 광경은 너무나 처참했다. 사막을 강타한 겨울폭풍은 500개가 넘는 텐트를 물에 잠기게 하거나 무너트렸다. 이러한 참담한 광경을 촬영하고 있을 때 나의 뒤에서 누군가 “하키 파디!”라고 크게 외쳤다. 이 말은 아랍어로 ‘깨어진 약속’ 이나 ‘공허한 말’을 뜻한다. 비록 많은 기자들이 난민촌을 취재하며 다녀갔지만, 난민의 삶은 여전히 개선되지 않았었다. 시간이 지나면서 난민의 상처는 깊어만 갔고 결국 이러한 절망가운데 쏘아진 화살이 나를 강타한 것이었다. 잠시 후 한 난민이 나의 어깨를 두드리며 자신의 무너진 텐트를 보라고 요청했다. 그리고는, “살려고 이곳까지 왔는데 왜 내 아들이 여기서 죽어야 합니까?”라며 절규했다. 겨울폭풍은 그에게서 2살짜리 아들을 빼앗아 갔다. 나는 이 순간 고심하며 나 자신에게 물었다. “과연 나는 포토저널리스트로서 이들의 삶에 영향을 미치고 있는가?” 라고……   Profile 작가소개 JD Lee was born in 1971 in ChungCheong province, South Korea. His interest in photography began in 1994 and ten years later, he was introduced to ‘storytelling photography’ in photojournalism. Lee took photos of Syria for six years until the civil war broke out in 2011. He was forced to leave the country and has been working for the Korean Christian Journal as a photojournalist in Jordan. In 2013, when FEBC-Korea began a fundraising campaign to help build container houses for the Syrian Refugees, Lee helped as the local coordinator. Arirang TV aired his documentation which was made with the view of a photojournalist. The documentary, ‘Tears of Zaatari,’ was the first in Korea dealing with the Syrian refugee crisis. Lee’s work has been published in The Korean Christian Journal, CGNTV, FEBC-Korea Magazine, The Kukmin Daily, National Geographic (Korean) Photo Academy, World Magazine, Religious Herald, Baptist Press News and many more. During his third year of covering the Syrian refugee situation, in March 2014, he was awarded first prize in the ‘International News Photography Category’ which was hosted by a international group Communicators Association. 1971년 충북 청주에서 태어나 1994년부터 사진을 찍기 시작했다. 2004년 미국에서 처음으로 포토저널리즘에 눈을 뜨게 되면서 스토리텔링 사진작가로 거듭났다. 2005년부터 중동 시리아에서 6년간 사진활동을 하다가 2011년 내전으로 무대를 요르단으로 옮긴 뒤 《코리안 크리스챤 저널》 중동특파원으로 활동중이다. 2013년 시리아 난민에게 ‘사랑의 집 보내기 운동’ 캠페인을 벌인 극동방송의 현지 활동을 도왔다. 한편 한국전쟁 휴전 60주년을 기념하는 ArirangTV의 한국 최초 시리아 난민 다큐 《자타리의 눈물》에 출연해 포토저널리스트의 시각으로 난민이슈를 국제사회에 알렸다. 《코리안 크리스챤 저널》, 《CGNTV》, 《극동방송 사보》, 《국민일보》, 《내셔널 지오그라픽(한국판)사진 아카데미》, 《World Magazine》, 《Religious Herald》, 《Baptist Press News》등 다른 국내외 미디어 채널로 시리아 난민이슈를 3년간 보도하였다. 2014년 3월 국제단체 커뮤니케이터스 협회 시상대회에서 <국제뉴스 사진부문> 1위를 차지했다.
